Tajweed – Level 1- Beginner

The primary aim of this course is to provide the students with the necessary knowledge to be able to recite the Qur’an with correct Tajweed. Level 1 introduces the student to the main rules of recitation. The course is based on both theory and practice so by the end of the course the student will be familiar with Tajweed rule terminology and the knowledge of their application. Pronunciation, confidence and retention of information will be facilitated with practice and participation of the whole class. Therefore, to maximize the achievable benefit, the class size will be restricted to ten.

The course consists of two parts, in the first part we will be covering the following topics:

1. Introduction to the course:
• Student introduction and familiarisation
• The virtue of learning the Qur’an
• The importance of the knowledge of Tajweed
• Introduction to Tajweed
• Manners and etiquette when reciting the Noble Qur’an
• Prostrations of recitation
• The seeking of refuge with Allah and saying the Basmalah
• Levels of recitation
• The principles of Tajweed
• Mistakes in recitation (al-Lahn)
• An elaboration upon some common errors

2. The articulation points of the letters:
• The letters of the throat
• The letters of the empty spaces in the throat and mouth
• The letters of the tongue
• The letters of the two lips
• The letters of the nasal passage

3. The Rules for Noon Saakinah and the Tanween:
• The definition of the Noon Saakinah and the Tanween
• Al-Iqlaab
• Al-Idghaam
• Al-Idhaar
• Al-Ikhfaa

4. The Rules for Meem Saakinah:
• Al-Ikhfaa Ash-Shafawi
• Al-Idghaam As-Sagheer
• Al-Idhaar Ash-Shafawi

5. The Rules for Laam Saakinah:
• Al-Idhaar
• Al-Idghaam
• Al-Ghunnah
• Al-Qalqalah

6. The Mudood:

a) Madd At-Tibee’ee (Al-Asli) – The Natural Madd

II. The Madd caused by The Sukoon

In the second part of the level students will be practicing and applying all the Tajweed rules, which is been taught in the first part throughout 22 short surah, from surah Al-Naas until surah Al-Duhaa
